Dispensing Technology for Uniform LED Potting
In LED potting, LED components, light modules, printed circuit boards or electronic components are protected, fixed or optically modified using a potting compound. Potting can be used to protect against moisture, dust, mechanical stress or chemical influences. At the same time, optical properties such as transparency, light transmission and a uniform surface play an important role in LED applications.
Precise dispensing technology allows the potting compound to be applied in a controlled and repeatable manner. Depending on the application, the material is dispensed selectively, over a surface or into defined cavities. Uniform material quantities, low-bubble processing, clean edges and consistent mixing quality for 2K materials are particularly important. Depending on the component geometry, material viscosity and production volume, LED potting can be performed manually, semi-automatically or automatically using a dispensing robot.

Automated LED potting using the 2K-DOS mixing and dispensing system. The 2K potting compound is precisely metered and then homogeneously mixed in the X-grid mixer. Before dispensing, the material in the 2K-DOS containers is degassed using a vacuum pump to reduce air inclusions. Due to the special geometry of the mixing elements, the X-grid mixer requires less length than many conventional static mixers. This provides more available travel on the Z-axis during robotic applications. The mixer and dispensing head are mounted on a cross-slide on the WRA-500 dispensing robot, allowing the mixer to be easily adjusted manually in the X, Y and Z directions after replacement.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions about LED potting
In LED potting, LED components, light modules or electronic components are encapsulated or partially covered with a potting compound. This can protect, secure or optically influence the components.
Precise dispensing ensures a uniform material quantity, clean surfaces and reproducible results. Too much material can overflow or affect the optical properties, while too little material may reduce the required protection or functionality.
Common materials include transparent potting compounds, silicones, epoxy resins, polyurethanes and thermally conductive potting compounds. The choice depends on whether protection, light transmission, heat dissipation or mechanical stability is the primary requirement.
Depending on the application, dispensing controllers, dispensing valves, cartridge systems, material pressure vessels, static mixers or dispensing robots can be used. For 2K materials, suitable mixing and dispensing technology is particularly important.
Yes, LED potting can be automated. A dispensing robot is particularly suitable for recurring components, defined dispensing positions and consistent dispensing paths. This can improve positioning, dispensing volume and repeatability.
For transparent potting compounds, low-bubble processing, clean material handling and a uniform surface are particularly important. Contamination, air inclusions or uneven dispensing quantities can affect the optical performance.
